Academic Technology Center - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

 Welcome to the Academic Technology Center at Highline College, run by the Information Technology Services department (ITS). ITS staff provide access to and support for instructional computing use by all students, faculty, and staff. Answers to our most frequently asked questions are listed below. Please also see the ITS Policies and Procedures for detailed information on ITS and ATC rules and regulations, and the ITS Help Desk for technical support.

HOW CAN I GET ACCESS TO ATC LABS?

Any currently enrolled student with a valid myHighline account is eligible to use Academic Technology Center facilities. Access will be granted via login with the student's myHighline login. CWU-Des Moines students have access to labs through their CWU tech fee. Students are required to activate their account before being able to log in. Activation may be done at https://my.highline.edu or at a the activation kiosks available in Buildings 29 and 30. Students are also required, on request, to show proof of identity in the form of a current valid Highline or CWU ID card. ATC labs are open to all Faculty and Staff.

HOW MUCH IS THE ACADEMIC TECHNOLOGY USE FEE?

The Academic Technology Use Fee (CF) currently costs $37.70 and is good for the duration of the current quarter. If you are registered for multiple classes taught in ATC facilities or Highline Online courses, you will pay no more than 2 CF fees per quarter.

HOW DO I GET MY USERNAME AND PASSWORD?

Students are required to activate their myHighline account before being able to log in. Activation may be done at https://my.highline.edu or at a the activation kiosks available in Buildings 29 and 30. You will set your username and password at that time. You may find further information on myHighline usernames and passwords and detailed instructions for activating your account at the IT Service Desk or at the passwords page.

If you are not registered for any classes, your account will not be active. If you register for a class after the start of the quarter, your account will be activated the following morning.

WHAT SUPPORT IS PROVIDED IN ATC LABS?

The lab assistants at the IT Service Desk are available to help troubleshoot our hardware, software problems, or printing problems as well as provide limited application support. If you have questions about a particular software feature or procedure, please check the application's on-line help first. Limited application assistance is available at the Service Desk, but due to the sheer number of programs available in the labs, we won't always know the answer to your questions on a particular application. If you have questions about your class assignments, please ask your instructor. Tutoring services are available free of charge from the Academic Success Centers in Building 26.

HOW MANY PAGES CAN I PRINT OUT IN ATC LABS?

Each active student is granted a $10 printing allowance per quarter. Students who pay the Instructional Technology fee, including CWU, Kaplan, and Heritage students, are granted an additional $10. Per page costs and other details are available in the Student Printing section of the IT Service Desk site.

MAY I INSTALL OR RUN MY OWN SOFTWARE IN IC LABS?

No, sorry. Personal applications, including but not limited to games, file-sharing, and communications software, are not to be installed or run in the labs. If additional software is required for a class, your instructor must make an official request to ITS staff to have it installed. Violations may result in suspension of your myHighline account and privileges.

ARE THERE OTHER COMPUTERS AVAILABLE ON CAMPUS?

There are public access stations available in the Library (Building 25) for Internet and Research use only. For building location please check the campus map page.

WHERE CAN I SAVE MY FILES?

All students are given 100MB of network storage available through My Documents on lab machines and governed by the Student File Storage Policy. In addition, all student accounts have unlimited online file storage with their student email accounts via Google Drive at https://drive.google.com/. Files may also be saved to students' personal USB storage drives from lab computers.

WHERE CAN I USE A COPY MACHINE?

There is a copy machine available in the open lab area of the ATC (Builidng 30, top floor). There are also copy machines available for student use in the Library (Building 25).  

WHERE CAN I USE A PHONE?

There are on-campus phones in the south corridor on each floor, and in the north corridor on the second floor. A red emergency phone is available outside in the building courtyard.

MAY I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS TO ATC LABS?

Food must be consumed in the lobby or corridors, it is not allowed in the labs or classrooms. Drinks may be taken into labs in closed containers with spill-proof lids only.
